Building Support for Middle East Peace In 1995, when Israeli and Palestinian leaders were actively engaged in the historic Oslo peace process, the perception in Washington was that most American Jews were opposed to territorial compromise and to balanced American diplomacy in the Middle East. That year, an advocacy think tank called Israel Policy Forum was formed to demonstrate that this perception was inaccurate, and to provide a mechanism for prominent, mainstream American Jews to express their support for the peace process and pro-active U.S. diplomacy. We played a major role in putting this organization “on the map” in Washington and other power centers, as well as within the American Jewish community. This involved planning and implementing aggressive media campaigns, ghostwriting and placing opinion pieces by prominent American and Israeli Jews, working in tandem with opinion research firms to create newsworthy polls and supporting outreach efforts to public officials in Washington. Changing the domestic political context of America’s Middle East policy is a challenge that is almost as daunting as achieving an enduring settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We believe, however, that this context is changing, and that more government officials and opinion leaders now understand that there is an active, influential “peace camp” in the American Jewish community.
