Tapio has made a career out of developing and implementing public policy and communications strategies for clients on the global stage. His work has given him valuable insights into how U.S. and multinational institutions affect company interests, and how companies and individuals can position themselves to take advantage of opportunities – or resolve complex difficulties – in the international marketplace. 

Before joining Strategy XXI, he worked for six years as a consultant at the international law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, advising multinationals on a host of domestic and international issues. Prior to that, Tapio was a Program Officer for the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Azerbaijan, implementing USAID democracy-building programs, and in Washington, where he led NDI’s efforts in Russia.

Tapio has a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from James Madison University and an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland.  He speaks Spanish, Russian, Swedish, and Finnish.
